One of the first things we did when starting Wonderland was to find an office – we weren’t looking for anything fancy, just a space big enough for a few people to get together and make a game. We were lucky, and found a sweet little office right next to the castle in Guildford: good location, close to industry chums, and dirt cheap (first rule of a startup is to stay lean). Sure, it was noisy, sweaty, and cramped, but it had character and was all we needed at that time. Plus, it was near to Lewis Caroll’s old haunts, which made us feel rather pleased with our choice of name.
A few months in, and I was feeling pretty happy about how our lovely new startup was going – we had a good concept in development with ngmoco, a great set of co-founders, and the plan was looking good. Only problem was, we were growing out of our office space…
Fast forward a few months to January 2010. Office space is now a big problem, as we want to hire new people but don’t have any space to do so. I start looking around, and find a perfect spot for us, that will accommodate our longer term plans for the company. Surely it will only take a couple of months to get a lease sorted out and move in…
Fast forward seven months, and we have finally moved to our new location in Farnham.
Why Farnham?
Our main criteria for moving were:
A versatile space, over 2000 square feet
Near Guildford, and easily commutable from London
In a characterful, vibrant location
Close to coffee shops, restaurants and entertainment
Having lived in the area for a long time, this made my shortlist either Guildford, Godalming or Farnham – we settled on the latter once we found a pretty much perfect office and location, right in the middle of the town.

Seconds from shops, restaurants, and pubs, with the University of the Creative Arts campus a minute away, we’re feeling great about our new place – and we’re just up the road from Guildford, and all our friends in the game development scene there.
It’s also big enough that we can experiment with a variety of layouts, including a mixture of private and team spaces – I’m not a fan of forcing everyone into a big open-plan office, and this gives us the chance to try a more tailored way of working and communicating.
It’s now being refurbished to our specification, and we’ll soon be fully ensconced in it.
